Think show bags, fireworks and rides and you know it’s Ekka time. But this year the real place to be is Strawberry Square!
That’s where The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s fantastic volunteers will be serving up the delicious iconic Ekka strawberry sundaes. The Foundation’s CEO, Ms Kate Ashton, said all that is needed now are a few more enthusiastic volunteers to help sell the sundaes. “This year the Foundation will be running four stalls so we are calling for more volunteers than ever before,” Ms Ashton said. “Already 1300 wonderful volunteers have put their hands up to make and serve the iconic sundaes at this year’s Ekka. “But we still need an additional 500 dedicated volunteers to cover the remaining shifts, especially in the evenings. “Why not bring along a whole group? Work a shift with friends and colleagues to have a fun time while supporting a great cause,” said Ms Ashton. “The Foundation has been serving sundaes at the Ekka for over 20 years and is looking forward to doing so again this year. “This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Foundation fixing broken hearts through life saving medical research, so it’s an extra special Ekka for us,” she said. “We’d love people to help us celebrate our special year by volunteering. Shifts run for five hours and include the important duties of cutting up strawberries, scooping ice cream and whipping cream to construct the luscious sundaes.” All money raised during the 10 days will go towards supporting world class medical research in cardiothoracic, mental health, orthopaedics, and transplants. Over the past year the Foundation has awarded more than $1.2 million in research grant funding. The Ekka runs from 11-20 August.
