Not since Mary and Frederick announced their engagement has there been a more anticipated royal union.
Queensland’s King Wally Lewis will join the Queen of Hearts Mary Long for the Cycle of Giving event at The Prince Charles Hospital this Saturday. “The Cycle of Giving celebrates organ and tissue donation, with dozens of cyclists riding from the Sunshine Coast to the hospital,” said Mary Long, who has organised the annual event since 2006. “Wally Lewis will join in the activities at The Prince Charles Hospital where we’ll have the duathlon, petanque and entertainment. “Wally will be taking part in our celebrity stationary bike race along with Duncan Armstrong, Lorian Graham and the Vintage Reds.” The Cycle of Giving is held every year at the start of Australian Organ Donor Awareness Week to encourage people to discuss organ and tissue donation, register as donors and to bring together transplant recipients for a celebration of life. “After my husband Mal’s heart transplant, we wanted to find a way to honour the wonderful people who shared our transplant journey,” Mary said. The Cycle of Giving is on Saturday 20 February. The ride starts at Landsborough at 6.00am and will pick up more cyclists at Caboolture, Bray Park and Whites St Cricket Grounds before arriving at The Prince Charles Hospital around 10.00am. From 8.00am there will be entertainment and “Come n Try” events beside the pool at The Prince Charles Hospital. “Whether your family has been touched by transplantation or donation or you’re just interested in a fun morning, come along and join in,” said Mary. “Watching dozens of bikes come up the hill to the hospital entry is definitely an impressive sight.” For more information visit www.tpchfoundation.org.au or www.cycleofgiving.com Australian Organ Donor Awareness Week starts on February 21.
