It's pretty well known that Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Treasurer, Wayne Swan survived his own battle with prostate cancer in 2001. He was lucky- early detection by a switched on GP saved his life and he recovered quickly and was able to return to politics. His passionate commitment to men’s health, particularly the need for men to recognise that prevention is better than hoping for a cure, prompted Mr Swan to accept an invitation to become The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s Ambassador for Men’s Health in February 2010. Wayne Swan grew up in Nambour and completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) at the University of Queensland. He managed Wayne Goss’s successful election campaigns in 1989 before himself being elected to Brisbane’s northern suburbs seat of Lilley from 1993 - 1996, and again from 1998, a job he has proudly held through to this day . From 1998 – 2004 Mr Swan was the Shadow Family and Community Services Minister, and in 2004 he became Shadow Treasurer. In 2007 he was sworn in as the Federal Treasurer after the Rudd Labor Government took office. He became Deputy Prime Minister in June 2010. While his political schedule is far from light, Mr Swan is dedicated to encouraging Australian men to talk to their doctors, to become aware of their own health, and to recognise that taking care of their family includes taking care of themselves. He also believes strong community relationships create a fair and vibrant society. He also recommends quality family time as a way to ensure good mental health and happiness. As often as possible, Mr Swan enjoys a bit of backyard cricket with his son Matthew and listening to his daughters Erinn and Libbi sing. He and wife Kim enjoy taking the family to the Sunshine Coast for holidays to relax with some surf, sand and sun.
